Whole
Foods was conceived by Ms. Ishi
Khosla and her husband Mr. Gagan Khosla
in July 2001. Born out of desire to restore
healthy eating habits of the urban city and
a need to help those who had established problems.
Whole Foods philosophy is rooted in the healing
power of food.
While
most think of health food as unappetizing, boring
with little appeal, Whole Foods believes that
the taste factor can never be ignored. There
is no point to make food/ recipes which will
not be eaten by most. Hence, I can easily say
that the USP of Whole Foods lies in compromising
both taste and health which is supported by
the growing popularity of our foods.
The
relevance of Whole Foods today in India is far
more than ever before. Indians are suffering
from lifestyle related diseases and diabetes,
obesity and coronary heart diseases have assumed
epidemic proportions. We Indians as a race are
also far more prone to them than the White race
(Caucasians) and the Japanese. With five deaths
per minute from heart disease in India, it is
time for a wake up call to introspect. We are
certainly eating badly- a vegetarian country
does not eat vegetables, consumption of refined
fats, sugar and flours loaded with chemicals
and pesticides. To top it all, if timely intervention
is not taken up, we not only will become disabled
but also cause a huge economic burden on the
society.
Whole
Foods is a very small initiative in this direction.
However, I suppose everything initially begins
small. I do hope that we have succeeded in making
some impact on the population. With almost every
food company now competing to make health products,
I certainly see a change. However small, I firmly
believe Whole Foods is step in the right direction
but we have long long way ahead……………………..
I
thank all my patients, clients, friends, who
have supported and encouraged me take my dream
forward. I thank my family for ensuring that
this happened and the media for an over whelming
support without which Whole Foods couldn’t have
reached where it has.
